  • Challenging Academics

Nearly three-quarters of the Hutchison faculty have advanced degrees. In a forward-thinking academic culture, they thrive on learning about emerging trends and implementing them in their classrooms. Visiting “resident scholars” offer expertise and pedagogical support. As thought-leaders in the education field, current teachers present regularly at the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools and other national symposiums.

Faculty in all divisions work collaboratively across disciplines so that every grade level builds on the skills developed the previous year. The end goal is to produce graduates who stand out in today’s competitive market with a healthy mix of academics, leadership, and co-curriculars. Discover our academic programs

Our unique approach to college counseling begins freshman year with college counselors in effect serving as academic advisors in addition to supporting a girl’s college aspirations. Hutchison girls rank among National Merit and Advanced Placement scholars each year. Graduates secure millions in merit scholarships and have their choice of the nation’s top colleges and universities.

Technology is introduced early and widely used to extend the curriculum as well as ensure that girls are prepared for a digital world. Hutchison’s one-to-one laptop program is now in its sixteenth year. Beginning in fifth grade, girls are assigned their own laptops for use at school and home.

Hutchison’s world language philosophy focuses on proficiency. Spanish is introduced in early childhood, and Chinese and Latin are introduced in middle school. By seventh grade, girls select one language to focus on through upper school. The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages awarded Hutchison the Melba D. Woodruff Award for Exemplary Elementary Foreign Language Program.

Emphasis on character development and leadership begins in Early Childhood with developmentally appropriate opportunities. Girls arrive in upper school poised and confident, ready to take the next step in Hutchison’s nationally renowned leadership development program, recently featured in Social Education, the flagship journal of the National Council for the Social Studies. Discover our leadership programs.

The Co-Edge program with Memphis University School for boys offers enriching learning experiences and collaborative opportunities in academics, the arts, community service, and social settings while maintaining each school’s commitment to single-sex education.

  • Community Service & Leadership

Our graduating classes devote on average more than 10,000 hands-on hours to the community during their high school years, demonstrating that "serving others" is a way of life. Explore the Hutchison Serves program.

Hutchison works with local and national community service organizations, including St. Jude Children’s Hospital, DeNeuville Learning Center, and the Memphis Food Bank.

Through Hutchison Serves, upper school girls are placed throughout the community to manage service projects. While the number of projects continues to rise each year, some service projects have been ongoing for up to six years, with multiple classes participating over that period. This continuity improves Hutchison’s impact on the community.
