Catherine Bowie ’28 Wins Golf State Championship

The standout Hutchison freshman is the first golf state champion in school history.
Catherine took home the TSSAA DII-AA State Championship with a score of 4-under par. She won by three strokes with a score of 66-70. She went from earning ninth last year as an eighth grader to maintaining a solid lead throughout this year’s two-day tournament.

“Watching Catherine’s performance at the state championship this year versus last showed how much she has grown as an overall player. Her constant dedication and focus during practice reflected in her confidence while competing,” Brittany Thompson, Hutchison varsity golf head coach, said.

Our state champion said she was proud of her performance but was surprised she had won. “I played well, I had a lot of fun, and I felt confident throughout both rounds,” Catherine said. “On the last hole, I made my par putt, and when I walked off the green, my family congratulated me. They knew I had won, but I had no idea.”

She helped her team earn third place by posting Hutchison’s best score at state in school history and the 7th best two-day total in tournament history. “As a freshman, she’s got many more records to set in the future,” athletics director Caroline Schaefer said.

Both Daily Memphian and Commercial Appeal named Catherine their Girls Golfer of the Year.
